Gordon Forster was the founding Editor of Northern History. New Approaches to the North: A Colloquium in Memory of Gordon Forster will be held on 29th September 2018. This colloquium will showcase new research on the history of the North, drawing attention to new findings and approaches. The papers will cover a variety of topics and historical periods from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, reflecting Gordon Forster’s wideranging interests. The Gordon Forster Essay Prize has also been established in his memory.
The academic journal Northern History was established in 1966 in the School of History at the University of Leeds. The journal’s purpose is to publish scholarly work on the history of the seven historic Northern counties of England: Cheshire, Cumberland, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Westmorland, and Yorkshire. Since it was launched it has always been a refereed journal, attracting articles on Northern subjects from historians in many parts of the world. The journal is published by Routledge and the website can be found here. The current Editors are Professor Stephen Alford, Professor Simon J. D. Green, and Professor Julia Barrow.
